How percentage calculations work

A percentage is a fraction out of 100. To find a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. To compare two values, divide the difference by the original value and multiply by 100 — that's how percentage increase, percentage decrease, and discounts are worked out. The percent calculator above does all of this for you instantly.

What is X% of Y?

Multiply the percentage by the value and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 150 = (20 × 150) ÷ 100 = 30.

X is what percent of Y?

Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. For example, 30 is what percent of 150? (30 ÷ 150) × 100 = 20%.

Percentage increase or decrease

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. From 50 to 75 is a 50% increase. The same formula works as a discount calculator: an item reduced from 80 to 60 is a 25% discount.

Reverse percentage

Find the original number when you know a percentage of it. If 30 is 20% of a number, the number is 30 ÷ 0.20 = 150.

How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by 100. A 20% tip on an 80 bill is 16, making the total 96.

Percentage difference

Compare two values against the original. From 80 to 100 the difference is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.
